Overlapping for Session 6
Hello to the (very) few blog readers of mine. =)
I've decided to try and keep updating this blog for all the 2 1/2 of you that actually read it. That and it's kind of therapeutic to type about my experiences or so I'm told. Another cool deal is that people curious about Animation Mentor can take a peek at the work we're doing and how we're progressing as students. That's right readers! I finally found out how to embed (correctly) a quicktime movie of the playblasts that I'll be submitting. I won't be posting the work I did before this week though, just from this week on.
This week's assignment is regarding overlapping. We were given a rig that consisted of a ball with a tail (lovingly called Tailor) and were charged with the task to display our understanding of the overlapping principle of animation.
Here's what I came up with:
Feel free to take it apart and leave some feedback if you like. It would be greatly appreciated by yours truly.

Hi Freddie,
Great animation - it does look very lively =) Allow me to go into more detail about the overlapping.
1. For the anticipation let him take his tail a littlebit upwards like he is gaining strength. We bulge our muscles before doing heavy work to pump us up. Just a tiny bit. It gives more life to his animation.
2. If you would break his tail on frame 8 (like the rest still kind of 'stays' where it was before) the tail gets a littlebit more floppy which is a nice effect. Depends on whether you want that.
3. From 10 to 12 and 14 to 15 there is no change to recognise. I would try to keep the tail in motion all the time. Follow the arc, let it go back to preferred rotation, whatever...
3. Finally, let it settle more elegant by coming down quicker and then go up again a littlebit (like a small whipping action). That finally sells him as a living beeing not able to control his tail 100% but just 95%.
Sorry for all the naging on such a great animation. These are jsut the ideas that came into my mind while watching your assignment.
After all you definitely got the hang of it and I think you don't have to hide yourself among the other AM-students. Some may have more experience but lack the will of working hard. If you keep going at this pace you will be where you want to be in no time =)
God bless you and your wife,
- Alex
